The event was started by streakers who crashed the parade. The first people to do so were a small group of friends and roommates from the adjacent Wallingford neighborhood, several of whom were bicycle couriers by trade. Participants now emphasize bodypainting and other artistry. The group is the largest and fastest growing ensemble associated with the parade. The parade, put on by Fremont Arts Council, is held on a Saturday close to the actual solstice. Art bikes are common and cycles include BMX bikes , cycle rickshaws , unicycles , clown bicycles , tall bikes , lowrider bicycles , tandem bicycles and tricycles.

One witness at the event in Canturbury, Kent, said: "I heard gasps and I turned around - it was a horrible sight". Police were forced to intervene in a naked cycling event - after reports one of the riders got 'overexcited'. The 'aroused' cyclist was pulled aside and put his jeans back on before being spoken to by officers. The naked rides, which take place in cities and towns around the world, are organised to highlight the dangers cyclists face from cars. One witness said: "Everyone was taking their clothes off to get ready for the ride. I heard gasps and I turned around - it was a horrible sight. It looked like he was enjoying the event a bit too much.
Standard and Naked Motorcycles
Fourteen years ago, Vancouver-based social activist Conrad Schmidt helped organize the first World Naked Bike Ride, a clothing-optional event to celebrate the power and individuality of the human body while advocating for less oil dependency and more bike-friendly streets and communities. Since then, the yearly rides have spread to more than 70 cities around the world. Others raise money, as well as awareness, for various causes. Groups of as many as 8, nude or nearly nude cyclists ride peacefully together and are generally tolerated, if not even assisted by local police forces. Like any good group ride, there are some basic rules that make it more fun—and safe—for everyone.
Here's some advice for navigating your first clothing-optional cycling event. Saving the planet, promoting a healthy body image, being self sufficient—all are worthy goals that many organizations share. Many such groups raise money and host events to spread their message. Some also ride naked. World Naked Bike Rides take place in 20 countries and 70 cities each year.
